1737: Thomas Paine born, Thetford, Norfolk.
1756: Moved to London. Sinking of the Terrible.
1757: Joined crew of King of Prussia.
1758: Working as a staymaker in Kent.
1759: Married Mary Lambert.
1760: Mary and child die in childbirth.
1762: Employed as an exciseman in Grantham, Lincs.
1764: Promoted. Moved to Alford, Lincs. Sacked after quarrel with superior.
1766: Reinstated with the Excise. Taught in London schools awaiting a posting.
1768: Posted to Lewes, Sussex. ‘Headstrong Club’ meet for discussions at White Hart Inn.
1771: Married Elizabeth Ollive.
1772: Defended Sussex excisemen in wage dispute. Published pamphlet ‘The Case of the Officers of Excise.’ Sacked by the Excise for being AWOL
1774: Separated from Elizabeth. Travelled to Philadelphia on London Packet. First Continental Conference
1775: Executive editor and contributor to Pennsylvania Magazine. Battle of Lexington
1776: Published ‘Common Sense.’ Travelled to New York. Declaration of Independence. Aide-de-camp to Gen. Greene. Published first part of ‘The American Crisis.’ Battle of Trenton.
1777: Secretary to the Committee for Foreign Affairs. Fled the sacking of Philadelphia. Silas Deane Affair.
1779: Resigned as secretary.
1780: Appointed as clerk for Pennsylvania Assembly. Siege of Charleston. Receives honorary MA from University of Pennsylvania. Published ‘Crisis Extraordinary’
1781: Visited France on The Alliance to find financial aid for war effort. Battle of Yorktown.
1782: Employed to write for the government. Published ‘Public Good.’
1783: Peace between US, Britain and France. Published ‘The Last Crisis.’ Resigned.
1784: Received land in New Rochelle, NY. Congressional grant of $3000 for services rendered.
1785: Scheme for an iron bridge.
1786: Published ‘Dissertations on Government.’
1787: Travelled to France then on to Britain to find backers for bridge design.
1789: Storming of the Bastille. Visited revolutionary Paris.
1790: Returns to Britain. Burke publishes ‘Reflections on the Revolution in France.’
1791: Published first part of ‘Rights of Man.’ Visits Paris during Louis XVI attempted escape.
1792: Published second part of ‘Rights of Man.’ Charged with sedition. Fled to France.
1793: Execution of Louis XVI. French declaration of war against Britain. Jacobin Terror. Published ‘The Age of Reason’. Arrested and jailed in the Luxembourg.
1794: Escaped the guillotine. Fall of Robespierre. Released.
1796: Published ‘Agrarian Justice’ and ‘Decline and Fall of the English System of Finance’
1799: Rise of Napoleon
1802: Returned to America
1809: Died

Poor Tom Paine! there he lies:
Nobody laughs and nobody cries.
Where he has gone or how he fares
Nobody knows and nobody cares.
